Had a great day with Nick Gooden of Carterville. After 4 days of very cold weather fishing was better than expected at Lake of Egypt. Water temps hovered around 50, and fish seemed willing to bite. We found fish active on steep banks in 10 to 14 feet of water. Jigs and plastics worked slowly produced bites where jerk baits did not.
Big fish really moved before the recent cold front ! Fished with Nick Gooden from Carterville. We caught several nice fish with one over 6 pounds and even lost some bigger fish. Bass had started to venture back into coves and were hitting shallow cranks . Weather should moderate soon and back at it we will be. Pictured is Nick and a couple of our fish from Crab Orchard.
Fishing really picking up in southern Illinois. Had over an inch of rain which provided some good water color. Wagon creek at Egypt is now very muddy but coves have controlled water color and fish are biting. Key for me yesterday was fishing very back of coves with stained water. Fish were hitting spinnerbaits presented on short casts to land quietly for spooky fish. Water temps solidly in the mid 50’s by afternoon.
Had a fun today with Don Johnson of Johnston City, Il. Caught 18 bass before noon today all on Texas rigged tubes in 4 to 10 feet of water. Water temps right at 50 degrees. Believe jerk baits would still produce also.
Had a good day on Crab Orchard on Wednesday. Caught 12 bass anchored by a good one. Had water temps in the mid to upper 50’s. Most fish came on red traps fished along shallow rip rap.
Fished today at Little Grassy with Keith from Carterville, Il. We found water temps close to 50 at back end of lake. Caught 15 bass up to 3 pounds. Good portion of the fish came on black and blue jigs in about 8 feet of water. Great day for February and looking forward to another day on the water tomorrow !
Practiced my vertical jigging today as our mild winter continues. Really enjoy this way of fishing, using the electronics and sitting over fish and structure . Caught fish in 22 to 25 feet of water today. Will include a picture of my graph showing my dropshot rig above a fish in about 20 feet of water, right after I took the picture I caught the fish.
Had a great time at Crab Orchard this past weekend ! 9 of us braved the weather and all boats caught crappie ! Keith, Braden and I probably caught 25 and kept enough of those for the fish fry. Water temps down to 41 after several cold days. Fish were in 12 to 14 feet and caught on 3 inch slab slayers. Spring is right around the corner and fishing just gets better from here 🙂
